Sagan
Carl Sagan was a brilliant astronomer, beloved scientific communicator and a major source of inspiration to many. His famous quote, "we are made of starstuff" encapsulates a profound and awe-inspiring truth about the universe and our existence. To me, the beauty of the quote lies in its ability to bridge the gap between science and poetry, reminding us of our profound connection to the cosmos and inspiring us to explore and understand our place within it.

I/II: made of starstuff
shop this originalHere, a woman's face has begun to emerge into existence, created by the particles found in both stars and human. I am intrigued by the idea that distinct "things" exist, separated from one another by solid borders that allows them to occupy space. This is the reality we perceive and exist in. However, at the quantum level, atoms are more "empty space" than matter, solid surfaces are an illusion, and particles aren't necessarily particles but can also behave like waves that exist in a range of possibilities. There is an inherent emptiness in all of us - much more so than actual substance. Rather, imagine we exist thanks to a multitude of fields in which matter pop in and out of existence. Perhaps then we are not as separate
from each other as our minds would have us believe?
When the painting is viewed in darkness, a different pattern emerges. The form is intentionally ambiguous to elicit projective responses and will act as a mirror to your psyche more than a figurative motif. -
II/II: made by starstuff
shop this originalIn the second work of "paraphrasing Sagan", a vacuum is defined by starstuff as a silhouette of a man. Imagine that "nothing" can still become "something" simply by being inferred from something "something" around it? In this case, the man in the painting is not made of starstuff, but rather by it. One could argue that some specific human traits share semblance to this phenomenon.
When this painting is viewed in ambient light, the painting appears 2-dimensional as the black paint absorbs 99.95% of visible light. However, when the painting is viewed in bright light, the relief created within the black void can be discerned and facial features are revealed. When the painting is viewed in darkness, a different pattern emerges. The form is intentionally ambiguous to elicit projective responses and will act as a mirror to your psyche more than a figurative motif.
